Evaluation of Three Red Light Therapy Treatments Delivered Over Seven Days
By Tony Sherry: Complementary Therapist
Introduction
This service evaluation was undertaken to explore the potential benefits of red light therapy (photobiomodulation) in individuals living with long-term musculoskeletal and neurological
conditions. Participants received three red light therapy treatments over a seven-day period and completed daily monitoring diaries documenting pain or discomfort levels, sleep quality, mobility, activity levels and general wellbeing. The purpose of this evaluation was to identify any observable changes during the treatment period and to provide preliminary data to guide future service development and evaluation.
Methodology
Four participants with chronic health conditions were recruited. Each participant received:
* Three red light therapy treatments over seven days
* Daily self-report monitoring
* A final evaluation questionnaire
Participants recorded:
* Pain or discomfort levels
* Sleep quality
* Mobility and function
* Daily activities
* General wellbeing
* Additional comments and observations
Discussion
Although this evaluation involved a small sample size and no control group, improvements were reported across every participant. Positive changes were observed in:
* Pain and discomfort
* Sleep quality
* Mobility
* Functional ability
* Relaxation
* General wellbeing
The consistency of findings is particularly notable given that all participants were living with chronic conditions of between 8 and 32 years' duration. The average reduction in discomfort was almost 60%, while every participant reported improvements in sleep, mobility and wellbeing. The outcomes reported by the participant living with cerebral palsy for 32 years suggest that further exploration of photobiomodulation within long-term neurological conditions may be warranted.
Conclusion
In this seven-day service evaluation, participants receiving three red light therapy treatments reported improvements in one or more areas of pain, sleep, mobility, relaxation and daily functioning. All participants reported positive outcomes and all participants stated they would recommend treatment to others. Whilst larger studies are required, these findings suggest that red light therapy may be a valuable complementary intervention for individuals living with long-standing musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
