How red light therapy can relieve the pain of tension headaches.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Stress and muscle tension are often factors in these headaches.

Approximately 50% of adults experience tension headaches at least every month, and about 1 in 30 adults experience chronic tension headaches (headaches on more than half of the days for three months or more).

Tension headaches are called episodic tension headaches if they occur on less than half of the days in a month. They are called chronic tension headaches if they occur more than half of the time.

Tension headaches typically don’t cause nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. They do cause a steady ache, rather than a throbbing one, and tend to affect both sides of the head. Muscle contractions in the head and neck are considered a major factor in the development of a tension headache. Some people get tension headaches in response to stressful events or hectic days.

These are common symptoms of a tension headache:

  • Slow onset of the headache

  • Head usually hurts on both sides

  • Pain is dull or feels like a band or vice around the head

  • Pain may involve the back part of the head or neck

  • Pain is usually mild to moderate, but not severe.

Some tension headaches may be triggered by things such as:

  • Emotional tension, anxiety, tiredness or stress.

  • Physical tension in the muscles of the scalp and neck.

  • Eye strain.

  • Hunger.

  • Physical factors such as bright sunlight, cold, heat, noise, etc.

Your genetic make-up may also be a factor. So, some people may inherit a tendency to be more prone to develop tension headaches more easily than others when stressed or anxious.
